	Gabriel's Angels Mission

To develop healthy relationships between abused and at-risk children and pets.

Following are some excerpts from the Gabriel Chronicle summer 2003

	Letter from the Director

	Crisis Nursery

Within the nurturing walls of The Crisis Nursery there are two basic programs. The first is the Residential Shelter where
temporary shelter is given to as many as 36 children at a time. The Residential Nursery provides consistent daily routines, medical assessments and care,
speech and language programs, indoor and outdoor recreation as well as crisis intervention counseling and community referrals
for parents and relatives. Children range from newborn to ten years at the shelter. The turn over can be rapid although children have stayed as long as
	11 months.

The second is the FACES program housed at the Virginia G. Piper Center. FACES stands for "Families And Children Experiencing Success".
This program is for children from 3 months to 5 years who live at home but have been identified as at-risk of abuse and neglect. Qualified children from the community engage in daily
schedules, which promote a mixture of activities, stimulation and play which meet the guidelines of the Federal Headstart Program. Daily
nutritional needs are met as well as developmental screenings. Most importantly, Family Support Specialists make home visits
where they role model positive behavior for the parents empowering them in their goal to become nurturing
caregivers to their children. Becuase children may participate in this program for years in the daytime, there is a consistency that enhances the
family's chance of success. The Crisis Nursery was the agency that Pam Gaber, the founder of Gabriel's Angels, volunteered for prior to our inception, so there is a very
special connection between the two. Our mission statements are very similar, although we employ different methods to attain our goals. At
FACES, "Overall dog therapy through Gabriel's Angels has expanded our program and allowed the children to experience the unconditional love and trust
that only man's best friend can give. Without Gabriel's Angels, the children would have one less friend in the world who will always
love them wether they are angry, sad or lonely. They can always count on the dogs to keep licking their faces and taking treats from thier
	hands."
